John Watts Memorial Lecture 2007
"It’s your hearing – protect it or lose it!"
The John Watts Memorial lecture for 2007 will take place at the Concert Artistes Association, 20 Bedford Street, London WC2E 9HP on Wednesday May 16 2007 at 4.30 pm.
This year the lecture will be taking the form of a discussion about the important issue of The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2006, which has introduced lower permitted sound levels in the work place. The music and entertainment sectors have until April 2008 to comply.
Noise induced hearing loss is often cumulative and not immediately obvious. Any threat to hearing has to be taken seriously as the effects of over-exposure to noise are irreversible. The HSE wants noise output reduced to 80 dB(A) first action level and 85 dB(A) second action level. The problem for the theatre and music industry is that “noise” is our living.
Loud disco music may be an enjoyable experience to some, for others it is a torment. As the compliance date looms, how will musicians in the orchestra pit and engineers mixing live sound for musicals deal with these new Regulations?
A number of speakers have been assembled to air their thoughts and to answer questions. Among them will be the following:
Paul Gillieron — Acoustician
John A. Leonard — Sound Designer
Pauline Dalby — Musicians’ Union
Brian Powell — Sonomax
Ken Bennett Hunter — Theatre Management Consultant (Chair)
Whether you are a fixer, a mixer, an employer or a player, come and join in the debate.
John Watts was the Health & Safety Officer at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre for many years and, at the time of his premature death in November 2000, was in charge of Health & Safety for the technical team at the Millennium Dome. This annual lecture is a memorial to a man who did a great deal during his life to ensure that performance spaces were safe working environments.
The Lecture is sponsored by the Association of British Theatre Technicians.
