QED Productions Back Christie HD Technology
One of the pioneers of early HD projection technology in event staging, London-based QED Productions, has adopted the latest generation 3-chip DLP technology with the purchase of eight Christie HD8K projectors.
QED director Paul Wigfield says that these devices are the brightest high definition projectors in their class, setting new standards in quality and ease of use. “We are delighted to begin a new partnership with Christie and I can confirm that this purchase is just the start,” he promises. Indeed QED is also already the first company in the world to take delivery of the new HD18K extreme high brightness projectors from Christie.
Paul set up QED with co-director Stephen Heliczer over 20 years ago, since when they have remained in the vanguard of technical production in a range of sectors from prestigious live events to broadcast.
“We had been looking closely at the developing HD market over the past year, and wanted to be ready to reap the rewards when the anticipated greater demand for HD from the event industry kicked in.”
“The reason we chose Christie as our partner — apart from the fact that they are the most advanced producers of HD projectors in the marketplace — was the completeness of the range, with six native HD projectors in the family all utilizing the same lens system. There is no other manufacturer that can offer this” he continued.
QED has already developed a unique flying frame system for all the Christie projectors in the range, making them easy to rig on site by AV technicians.
Finally, not only has the company purchased full sets of lenses, but also the Christie TWIST module for edge-blending and image warping — which can greatly expand the creative capabilities of the projectors. This, alongside the standard two HD input channels that will also allow 4:4:4 signals, digital dark level adjustment, Intelligent Lens System™ on zoom and focus and DMX 512 communication capabilities, gives the Christies a competitive edge. “Having the option of a Twist module is vitally important in rental staging where unusual rigging configurations are often required.”
“Having gone as far as we could with standard definition projection I am delighted we have decided to take the jump to the next level,” summed up the QED director. At the same time he confirmed that this is just the beginning of the company’s mission to develop a Christie-based rental fleet of HD products.
The HD8Ks were used at a high profile international broadcast event last month with the first outing of QED’s specially designed and manufactured flying brackets. The flying system is compatible with all Christie Roadster projectors, both standard and high definition models, and is available for hire or purchase directly from QED.
