Romance on the Road for grandMA

Two grandMA lighting consoles are accompanying ‘My Chemical Romance’ on the alternative rock band’s The Black Parade world tour, which commenced February 22 in Manchester, New Hampshire. Celebrating the band’s alter ego and third studio album, The Black Parade tour has scheduled dates throughout the US and in Canada, the UK, Ireland, Germany, Sweden, France and Denmark.

Lighting designer and programmer Ethan Weber previously used the grandMA for one-off shows but this is his first tour with the console. “I like it a lot,” he says. “It’s definitely a powerful tool. I like that you can configure it however you want tailoring it to your own needs and desires. And it’s stable, unlike some other systems.” My Chemical Romance’s show consists of two parts. In the first, with The Black Parade theme, the theatrical-style lighting is driven by the set, which is based on ideas from the band and Atomic Design, and the band’s Black Parade video. The second part harkens back to their first album with a stripped down, almost punk rock look to the single backdrop and its bump and flash lighting.

The grandMAs operate as the main lighting console and backup with two NSPs on each and one spare. Among the equipment controlled are 20 Martin MAC 2k profiles, 30 MAC 2k washes, 22 MAC 700 profiles, 26 MAC 700 washes, 10 Biglite 4.5s and 36 Atomic 3k strobes. Weber reports that he’s having a “very good experience” with the grandMA, and he’s pleased with A.C.T Lighting's great support. “Both Bob Gordon and Joe Cabrera have gone out of their way to make sure everything is perfect,” he said.

"Working with Ethan is a joy. He is an experienced designer and programmer and has worked with a variety of control systems. He really provides us with a great perspective. Not only is Ethan good, but he is one of the really good guys as well," commented A.C.T Lighing president and CEO Bob Gordon. The grandMA is exclusively distributed in North America by A.C.T. Lighting.
