VDC for Aston Martin DB5 Re-Build
UK cable specialist VDC Trading is gaining a strong reputation in the classic car market for the quality of its Van Damme cable, which is finding its way into the entertainment systems of a variety of upmarket vintage cars.
Among the most prestigious of these installations was an audio system on board a 1964 Aston Martin DB5. It was carried out by Aston Martin specialist Desmond Smail. These iconic and magnificent cars are recognised throughout the world thanks to numerous appearances in James Bond movies. To acquire one of these highly desirable cars you wouldn’t get much change from £200,000.
“The owner wanted a state of the art audio system installed and because of the inherent value of these vehicle, we applied exacting standards in terms of both equipment and cabling,” says Desmond Smail. “The entire installation was carried out using Van Damme cable because it is very tough and reliable and delivers the kind of quality that brands like Aston Martin deserve. Using a superior brand like Van Damme really does make a difference to audio system’s overall fidelity.”
Desmond Smail has been selling, servicing and repairing post-1958 Aston Martins since 1981. Based, in Olney, Buckinghamshire – just five miles from the Aston Martin factory in Newport Pagnell – his garage is renowned for the quality of its workmanship and for the care and attention to detail it lavishes on its customers’ cars.
“These cars are valuable and therefore the owners do regard them as an investment and will insist on the best,” Desmond Smail adds. “Although they are keen to retain the original look of the cars, they also want modern touches such as satellite navigation and in-car entertainment systems. For example, we recently installed an entertainment system that looked like a period radio but actually had a pop-out DVD screen and CD player.”
Niall Holden, head of VDC Trading and an Aston Martin fan, says: “We’re delighted that a renowned specialist like Desmond Smail is insisting on Van Damme for his cabling requirements. We apply very exacting standards to our manufacturing and it’s good to see our high levels of quality are making an impact and being recognised in such a prestigious market.”
