Since taking over the full technical responsibility of London’s most celebrated nightclub, Sanjeev Bhardwaj (or “Sanj” as the entire pro audio industry knows him) has fastidiously continued to maintain the high technical standard for which Fabric has always been noted.

Since the club systematically began converting its sound reinforcement to Martin Audio Blackline and Line Array loudspeakers several years ago, Sanj has made it his mission to move the amplifier power exclusively to the same source.

This month his dream was realised when all other amp brands finally made way for multiples of Martin Audio’s new four-channel amplifiers, which provide both an economical and optimised solution.

Says Sanj: “At the same time we have taken the opportunity to upgrade some of the loudspeaker specifications — for example we have replaced the Blackline F8’s in the VIP Room with F10’s, which are individuallty controllable — so our VIP clients are a lot happier.

Next to the VIP area in Fabric’s Room 1, the old Martin Audio LE400C wedge monitors on the stage have now been complimented with four of the new, sleek Martin Audio LE1500’s.

All three DJ booths now benefit from having Blackline F12 reference monitors — no fewer than four for the DJ’s operating in Rooms 1 and 2.

In Room 2 Sanj has now assigned a pair of Martin Audio MA4.8Q (4 x 1200W networkable) amplifiers to run the high and mid sections of the Blackline H3 system and an MA6.8Q (4 x 1700W amp) detailed to the low end.

A pair each of Blackline H2’s are also operating off MA4.8Qs while four MA2.8s stereo amps power the eight S218 subs, and a further pair of MA4.8Q’s drive the four F12 DJ monitors.

It’s a similar story elsewhere. In the entrance to Room 3 Fabric have added a pair of Blackline F8’s on delays from the BSS Soundweb DSP processor, powered by a Martin Audio MA4.8Q.

As with the other rooms, the amplification is entirely Martin Audio. While an MA1.3s now drives the DJ monitors, the Blackline F10’s are assigned to an MA4.8Q, the four F15 tops are run from a second MA4.8Q and the bottoms from a 2.8s (two speakers per channel). The S218 subs are hooked up to an MA2.8s, while a further MA1.3s drives the F8’s, which have been moved to the chill-out area.

“The result of this is that the sound is a lot warmer and the bottom end a lot tighter now,” says Fabric’s technical guru. “It’s already proving very popular with our DJ’s.”

He adds: “This was an essential upgrade, and a major part of nearly £70,000 which I have spent so far this year on keeping the sound fresh.” Aside from bringing in a TC Electronic EQ Station (and a further Soundweb) he has also undertaken much-needed feedback suppression in Room 2, by adding extra isolation.
