Martin AQ’S Escape to Coventry

Martin AQ’S Escape to Coventry

Martin Audio AQ series speakers provided an elegant sound solution for Leamington Sight & Sound recently when they became involved in the conversion of a former fire station in Coventry to a chic bar/bistro and live entertainment venue.

The Old Fire Station in Coventry’s new Millennium Quarter was purchased by local entrepreneur Brian Mills of Phoenix Bars, and turned into Escape. To carry out the transfiguration he enlisted MA Design to build the interior character. LSS’s Ian Potter saw the opportunity to work within the design and divide the single-floor venue into three separate sound zones, covering the Live and Dance area, the Bar and the Reception/front of house.

Ian is a long-time advocate of Martin Audio loudspeakers and the AQ series gave him the opportunity to match the design aesthetic with a versatile, passive two-way solution that would meet all the demands, from low-level background to DJ playback and a wide variety of live entertainment (including ska, jazz and swing bands). He specified four flown AQ12’s and a pair of ground-stacked AQ212’s for the main dancefloor, with six AQ10’s and a pair of AQ112’s covering the peripheral areas — all processed using two of the dedicated AQX system controllers.

The hugely-popular AQ12 and AQ10 respectively house a 12in and 10in long-throw, direct radiating bass driver with a 2.5in voice coil and a 1in exit compression driver. The subs are single and double 12in dual-driver, direct radiating long-throw bass drivers.

In the void area between bar and dancefloor a pair of Martin Audio’s new C8.1T ceiling speakers (with 8in and 1in horn-loaded dome tweeter) ensure that the music remains evenly distributed whether during the day or during the full-on after dark weekend sessions.

As the venue enjoys seven-days-a-week trading, with long duty cycles, Ian Potter knew that he had to turn to the most reliable and durable of equipment. And the AQ series certainly hasn’t let him down.

“The sound system is fully-optimised, and the client is delighted,” he says.
