New Guide to Temporary Demountable Structures Will Aid Planning for 2012 Olympics

Temporary demountable structures play a vital role in helping stage all kinds of events from pop concerts to race meetings. They are expected to feature heavily in helping London to stage the 2012 Olympics, and were a key aspect of the winning bid. They can help to minimise capital expenditure for clients, while also making events more sustainable, as facilities can be re-used.

Available from 14th May 2007, the third edition of Temporary demountable structures, Guidance on procurement, design and use is a timely update, and will assist in the preparation and planning currently underway for many forthcoming events, including the 2012 Olympics. It has been carefully prepared by an expert panel made up of representatives from the events and entertainments industry, Government, and the Institutions of Structural and of Civil Engineers.

This guide will be issued to all local authorities in England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Communities and Local Government will be sending a letter alongside it to local authorities in England and Wales, endorsing its use as the authoritative text on this subject. SBSA will do the same for Scotland as will the Department of Finance and Personnel in Northern Ireland. It will provide thorough guidance on all aspects of procurement, design, erection and use of temporary demountable structures for event organisers, venue owners, local authorities, contractors and suppliers, and competent persons who are responsible for their design.

New approaches to the design of temporary structures to resist wind loads are presented, and extensive new information and guidance is given on statutory control, ground conditions, inspection and erection. The safety of the users is of paramount importance, and guidance is also offered on the hazards and risks associated with these structures, and on achieving safe structures.

Dr Keith Eaton, Chief Executive of IStructE, commented: “Temporary demountable structures are playing an ever-increasing role in the events and entertainment industry, particularly as their re-useable nature has excellent sustainability credentials. This guide is the industry text book for this field and will be essential for ensuring successful planning for key UK events, such as the 2012 Olympics.”
