Sound it Out - The ABTT Theatre Show Exceeds Expectation with Innovation

As the ABTT Theatre Show draws closer (13-14 June, Royal Horticultural Halls, London), its Organisers’ - the Association of British Theatre Technicians – has announced that current pre-registrations are indicating another record attendance and that again over 100 exhibitors will showcase a spectrum of technical solutions for everyone involved with housing and presenting the performing arts. Now in its 29th year the ABTT Theatre Show welcomes a broad base of visitors seeking to find out how the latest in technology can add value to a venue, and make it capable of meeting the demands of contemporary productions and statutory government guidelines.
In the fast moving digital world, advancements within theatre technology have reached a point where solutions are now not only affordable but also designed for non-technical users. And this technology can be adapted to augment any performance space be it any scale of theatre, a concert hall or a multi-purpose venue. No longer is there a divide between large and small theatres, professional and academic drama – the same technology embraces all facets of performance.
A host of advanced audio systems solutions will be showcased from loudspeakers to radio microphones, digital consoles, FX systems and communications systems.
KV2 will showcase its established EX series of high end powered enclosures, launching the new EX6, which is feature packed. It includes many high spec components, including the KV2 1” NVPD compression driver, Trans coil 6” woofer and complete on board control with electronic crossovers, phase alignment, equalisation and speaker protection integrated into the EX6’s amplifier module.
Italian cable manufacturers, Link srl, will highlight the latest enhancements to its Eurocable range of ultra-flexible speaker mulit-core cable, which is specifically designed for connecting multi-amplified touring systems.
Martin Audio will present its expansive range of cabinets plus it will showcase The Engineer – a 4 input and 8 output digital controller with complete routing, crossover, equalisation, limiting and delay functionality for every channel. It deploys sophisticated human based adaptive algorithms to deliver consistent sound quality irrespective of the input signal. Martin Audio will also exhibit its new amplifiers – the MA18K, MA12K and MA9.6 K. Compared to conventional amplifiers, these three new additions to this audio giant’s portfolio offer unparalleled levels of efficiency, delivering an astonishing 95% of the input power where it’s needed, with only a 5% loss dissipated as heat.
Harman Pro will present a host of products across its distributed lines. These include AKG, BSS Audio, Crown, dbx, JBL, Lexicon and Soundcraft. AKG will be showing their WMS450 wireless mic system, C547 boundary mics, C520 miniature headset mics, IVM wireless in-ear monitoring systems and the limited edition C414 mic. BSS sound web and Soundweb London will be on display, as will Crown amplifiers ranging from affordable XTI models to the next generation I-Tech range, all featuring on board DSP. Lexicon and dbx will highlight the latest in their respected signal processing ranges, whilst theatre sound stalwart JBL will have several of its loudspeaker systems on display.
The latest from d&b audiotechnik will be showcased on its unusually animated stand on which it will introduce its expanded Remote network including the latest ROPE C software and the new d&b R60 USB to CAN interface. This subtle addition to d&b’s product range when coupled with the D12 or E-PAC amplifiers enables elegant and complete system control monitoring.
Alcons Audio will highlight its range of systems that feature its proprietary pro-ribbon transducer technology. New to the show is Alcon’s QB363 triple-12” arrayable bass extension of the QR-series pro-ribbon column arrays. The BF151 single-15” compact high efficiency bass and the exchangeable Digital Drive Processor complements the Alcons ALC amplified–controllers. This DDP strengthens Alcon’s ‘systems synergy’ philosophy.
Theatre sound specialist Orbital Sound will highlight both its rental and installation sales divisions. Showcasing the huge potential of Zaxcom’ s digital radio mic system and Orbital’s bespoke Zed Alpha monitoring system, the company will also highlight HME’s advanced wireless comms solutions, as well as presenting the latest mixing and loudspeaker solutions from Yamaha, and sponsoring the first digital mixing console training sessions at the show for Yamaha.
RF specialists -Trantec - will exhibit its new S5 series UHF wireless mic system, which is designed for both large-scale and small-scale theatre productions. Designed and built to the highest specifications, its receiver features a 40 MHz bandwidth with multiple banks of intermodulation-free sets of up to 40 frequencies as well as boasting the flexibility of tuning to any grid frequency. Trantec will also preview its ground-breaking SD 7000 – one of the world’s first professional quality digital radio mic systems. It represents a radical step change offering pure digital transmission, without intermodulation effects and non-linearities found in all analogue compander circuitry.
Allen & Heath will premiere a fourth control surface to the iLive digital mixing console, joining the existing iLive-122, iLive-144, and iLive-176 on their stand at ABTT.
Marquee Audio will showcase the latest evolution of the Digidesign Venue Desk. Plus they will demonstrate the latest developments from Optocore’s fibre audio network in conjunction with Yamaha digital mixing consoles. Further examples of audio networking will be courtesy of Auvitran’s Ethersound interfacing products.
