Blackout Supplies LED Starcloth to Eurovision

The 52nd Eurovision Song Contest, was the most successful in the event’s history, with more than 110 million TV viewers tuning in across the continent – the highest number ever. As usual, the event held in mid-May was notable not just for the variety of its music and the unpredictability of its performers, but for its state-of-the-art production values.
Putting all the various elements of the stage and show together inside Helsinki’s Hartwall Arena was the responsibility of UK-based Stage One, who in turn asked Blackout to provide some 60m by 12m of LED Starcloth as a stage backdrop and at stage entrances.
Steve Dolan, account director at Stage One states: “Blackout were the obvious choice to provide the starcloth as they are the leading provider of starcloth and drapes in Europe. As far as I am concerned there is really no other company who can provide not just the drapes but all of the other technical / rigging service that come as part of the Blackout package. The starcloth looked really good and we were very happy with the complete management and execution of the project. Stage One and Blackout have a very good working relationship and I am sure this will continue."
Blackout’s LED Starcloth was chosen to provide the perfect backdrop for a gently asymmetrical over-stage rig – on which was hung a large number of the show’s 500-plus moving lights – in addition to the distinctive curved LED screen which was the brainchild of lighting designer Mikki Kunttu.
Kevin Monks, project director at Blackout, concludes: “The show designers at Eurovision are constantly raising the bar in terms of lighting effects and innovation, and it is a hugely rewarding project to be involved with – exactly the kind of creative and logistical challenge we enjoy!”
