ETC Goes Large at ABTT

ETC’s new top-of-the-line control system for large and repertory theatres, Eos, has made its first public appearance in Europe at London’s ABTT show at the Royal Horticultural Halls.

Even though the control system has not yet officially launched in Europe, Rambert Dance Company has taken delivery of its Eos desk; the associated remote processor unit for backup, Radio Focus Remote unit and fader wing are on their way. It will be used by Rambert for the first time in July for workshops, while its first full show is set for September in Salford.

Winner of the LDI Product of the Year Award for best debuting product in the lighting category, Eos is ETC’s most sophisticated lighting control system yet. Designed for the rigorous demands of West End and Broadway shows, opera houses, concert venues, TV studios and large productions, Eos is the culmination of extensive ETC console experience, research and end-user feedback. Boldly new in its visionary features and functionality, Eos is also undeniably ETC – users will be instantly comfortable with its operational style and syntax.

Eos provides a syntax and operational style familiar to most lighting designers, allowing them to speak to their moving light and conventional programmers in a language each will understand. Designers will also be able to work from a laptop or Remote Video Interface connected to the Eos network. These remote stations can mimic the programmers’ displays, or designers can set up their own workspace, totally independent of the programmer.

ETC’s Eos product manager Anne Valentino explains: “We developed this powerful new desk to be familiar and comfortable, while providing better, faster ways to programme a show. Some things are obviously new – how lights are marked, how quickly and intuitively patch works, our query function and setting colour by matching to gel references, for example. But we also looked for every opportunity to streamline frequently used functions. Everything was optimised to be simple, easy and fast.”

Eos is available in two models: Eos 8K (which supports 8,000 outputs) and Eos 4K (4,000). Accessories include a Remote Processor Unit (RPU), which provides additional backup options and stand-alone playback functions; a Remote Video Interface (RVI) workstation; and a Radio Focus Remote (RFR) to operate the most common maintenance and focus functions.

The Client Software Kit includes a CD image of the Eos OffLine software, with a dongle to enable a third party computer access to the network. This station can then serve as a remote display or programming device.

Eos system capacity: 8,000 or 4,000 outputs/parameters, depending on model, 5,000 control channels (devices), 10,000 cues, 99 cue lists, 30 fader pages, 4 x 1,000 palettes (intensity, focus, colour, beam), 1,000 presets (all palette), 1,000 groups, 1,000 effects, 1,000 macros, 1,000 snapshots, Supports three VGA or DVI monitors starting at 1280 x 1024 resolution, Hard disk,

USB ports for USB Flash drives, pointing devices, keyboards, Multiple timecode inputs simultaneously.
