Fineline Makes Waves in Hawaii
Bristol based fabrication specialists Fineline were commissioned by live brand event producers Wave Marketing and communications Ltd to design and build a 16ft wide classic Chevrolet scenic front. This was destined for Bar Moto in the garden of the Mauna Lani Resort on Hawaii’s Big Island for a Motorola corporate event.
Although Fineline’s Multiax 5 axis router could have made it in one piece, the Chevy had to be designed to split into elements small enough to be fitted into 747 air freighting containers - and it also had to be completed in just two weeks to make the deadline.
Fineline's Darren Wring comments: "Making the prop itself was a relatively straightforward request and that's exactly what we're geared up to do. It was the seriously short timescale and the fact that it had to be designed to be broken down for freighting that were the challenges."
The Fineline team swung into action. First they researched and found a suitable graphics file to work from - of a 1957 Chevrolet Belair - on 3D artwork shop Turbosquid. This was scaled up to the required size in Mayka 5-axis CAM software after which they worked out how to break it down for shipping, and input the information into the router.
Made from 6 x 8’ x 4’ x 2’ standard density polystyrene blocks, once formed, the Chevy front – weighing approx 100kg - was then spray painted Candy Red with silver flecks mimicking the model’s original classic colour. This process was completed in a car spray booth with cellulose paint after being coated with polyester body filler and plaster.
Fineline also fitted it out with a fully working set of headlights and side lights, utilizing 22Watt/12 Volt automotive brake light bulbs, complete with in-built 110V transformer. These were supplied separately on movable spikes, allowing the rigging crew the flexibility to locate them exactly where appropriate once the piece was rigged on site. The headlights were made from 40mm thick acrylic material, fabricated on one of Fineline's Gerber Sabre 3 axis machines.
Once completed, the Chevy front was flown from Fineline’s base in Bristol to Hawaii where it was assembled by Wave Marketing's crew for the event, a process production managed by Gareth Wooton.
It was a centerpiece for the party, creating a very attractive backdrop to the lagoon bar.
