HHB Supplies Complete Music/ICT Classroom and Recording Studio Systems to Kingston Grammar School

Specialist audio technology supplier HHB Communications has supplied complete music/ICT classroom and recording studio systems to Kingston Grammar School. Supplied in several stages over an 18-month period, the equipment is installed in the Performing Arts Centre housed in the school’s new Queen Elizabeth II Building,

The Apple iMac based music/ICT classroom system includes 24 computers with a dedicated Apple Xserver, supported by tape back-up and protected by a UPS unit. With assistance from HHB’s Education Sales Department, the school specified two classroom workstation configurations to match the broad range of musical activities available to students.

The recording studio system combines a Mackie analogue mixer with a computer-based digital recorder/editor, based around an Apple PowerMac G5 computer. An analogue mixer was preferred over a digital device because students better understand the process of recording with analogue equipment – a knowledge that can be easily transferred to a fully digital system at a later date – and because the equipment is more durable.

Current plans for the facility include the recording of GCSE and A Level performing coursework along with the teaching and learning of Music Technology including sequencing, arranging and improvising, controlling and interpreting MIDI data, and music and the moving image.

The facility will offer new co-curricular opportunities too. The recording technology, networked to the Music School's new G5 iMac computers, creates the potential to record demo CDs, to produce radio content and to introduce TV and filmmaking.

Speaking on behalf of HHB, Education Sales Manager Andrew Hingley says: “We worked in close consultation with the team at Kingston to ensure maximum return of their considerable investment in music composing, recording and ICT technology. Wešre delighted that the new facilities are already operating successfully and look forward to assisting Kingston Grammar School in the future.”
