Learning from the Glastonbury Festival

A team from across the UK will visit this month’s Glastonbury Festival to see how the local council deals with the event.

Mendip District Council, which is the licensing authority for the festival, has invited representatives from other councils and national organisations to visit the event in Pilton on Friday, June 22.

The visit has been organised through the Local Government Association’s Culture, Tourism and Sports Board, which involves local government officers and councillors from across the country. They focus much of their work on those three key areas on a national level.

Among those who will attend the visit are Charlotte Meller from LACORS (Local Authorities Coordinators Of Regulatory Services) and councillors representing the City of York, Essex County Council and North Cornwall District Council.

Mendip District Council leader Cllr Ken Maddock, who set up the visit, said all of those attending share a common passion – a drive to learn from the tourism and culture experiences of other local authorities around the UK. He said: “The Glastonbury Festival helps put our wonderful district on the map.

“Wherever I go people don’t usually know where Mendip is but as soon as I tell them we are the district council responsible for licensing the Glastonbury Festival, then their eyes light up in recognition.”

In addition, the council is working with local businesses to discover how Glastonbury Festival impacts on the local economy. Businesses will receive a survey in July asking them questions about job creation, local trading opportunities and the impact the festival has on their turnover. The results will be available in the autumn.
