Geo D Turns Up the Oxegen Level and Goes Pink for EQ Audio and Events

Oxegen 2007 returned to Punchestown Racecourse in Co. Kildare this month when 80,000 people arrived to see a superb line-up of legends and up-and-coming bands on several stages. Tickets sold out as soon as they went on sale.

One of the stages was the dance arena, where Dublin-based total production company EQ Audio & Events fielded a powerful Nexo Geo D vertical tangent array to enable some of the world’s best known DJs and turntablists, such as Frankie Knuckles Jr, Deep Dish, DJ Shadow, Felix da Housecat and Erol Alkan to present a heady mix of disco, house, electro and synth.

Shay Hannon, MD EQ Audio & Events, had become an adopter of Nexo’s legendary Alpha systems soon after setting up EQ Audio & Events seven years ago, and he admits he was eagerly looking forward to flying the Geo D system in front of 8,000 people at Punchestown – thanks to a co-operative effort with Liverpool-based Adlib Audio who augmented Fuzion’s demo rig with their own stock of Nexo Geo D.

The company hung 12 boxes of Geo D per side in two arrays, groundstacking six of the Geo D subs underneath at each stage wing. The PA was augmented by eight classic Nexo S2 subs, with six of the brand new Geo 1230 enclosures providing infills during the three-day event.

Hannon says that the support he received ensured that he could audition Adlib’s demo rig in optimum performance mode. “We designed the system using GeoSoft predictive visualisation software to eliminate any hot or weak spots and put all the processing through the dedicated NX242 processor,” he said. “We were delighted with the performance and are indebted to the assistance provided by Fuzion’s Ed Draycott and Adlib. Ed provided all the necessary technical backup for my Senior Systems Engineer, Kevin Maddigan who used his wealth of experience to design and install the system to achieve its optimum performance.”

With barely time to catch a rest, and fired by the confidence provided at Punchestown, EQ Audio & Events then moved onto the Killarney Summerfest, where Pink was headlining — carrying the same rig, but bolstered to 18 x Geo D mid-top enclosures per side to cater for the 12,000 people assembled in the Fitzgerald Stadium. They also were able to fly six Geo D subs per side which gave incredible low end control and coverage across the audience area. “I could feel the subs at 121m with just six flown per side — it was incredible,” said Shay. The company provided racks and stacks, and system-teched the event for Mikam Sound.

As a result he is steadily designing an optimised Nexo rig for all occasions — having already run the Geo D and Geo D sub combination (which he described as “awesome”) on a show with Clannad, before adding some Nexo S2s into the mix.

Summarised the technician: “EQ Audio & Events has grown rapidly over seven years into a full production company with a cutting-edge inventory; we see Nexo as very much part of the next generation.”
