Hilary Boulding Appointed New Principal of Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama
The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) Board of Directors has just confirmed the appointment of Hilary Boulding as Principal to replace Edmond Fivet, Wales’ longest serving Principal/ Vice Chancellor.
Hilary has held posts at Arts Council England since 1999. Currently as Director, Music Strategy, Hilary leads national policy and strategy in music within the publicly funded arts sector.
In this capacity she led the stabilisation of the English symphony orchestra sector and brokered partnerships and funding with the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) to extend training opportunities for young musicians.
As Co-Director of the Arts Council’s 21st Century Programme, Hilary was responsible for developing strategies to support the arts sector to meet the challenges of a new era.
Prior to joining the Arts Council Hilary had a successful career in arts broadcasting, including periods as a Commissioning Editor at BBC Radio 3 and as Head of Arts and Music (Television and Radio) at BBC Wales.
Hilary has worked extensively across the arts industry and has a confident and compelling vision for the College which builds on the hard work of her predecessor.
Hilary Boulding said: “I’m delighted at the opportunity to lead the RWCMD at such an exciting point in its development. “We are currently witnessing unprecedented change in both the arts and education sectors and that offers many opportunities for a respected Conservatoire whose role is to provide the bridge between young people and a career in the arts.
“I can’t think of a more exciting prospect than to combine my passion for the arts with the opportunity to support and nurture the next generation of artists.”

This new appointment comes at an exciting and challenging time. Most recently the College has developed a new strategic alliance with the University of Glamorgan. And there are plans for growth in quality and resources, including ambitious plans for a 350-seat concert hall, studio theatres and rehearsal spaces. Edmond Fivet has left an enviable legacy and we are confident Hilary will take us forward with her confident and compelling vision for the College.”
