Hippotizer Drives Video for Nickelback Tour
The Nickelback North American summer tour began in June at the Bay Roberts Festival in St. John’s, Newfoundland and runs through September, with a final date in Kansas City. The tour is a mix of stadiums and festivals, most of which are already sold out. Mode Studios of Seattle, production designers for the tour, are using massive video displays to accommodate the larger venues.
Mode Studios and lighting designer Chris Maeder combine video and lighting for scenic displays and effects. Two Hippotizer Stage media servers feed video content (synchronized with audio) to a Barco SLite 26 x 22 ft. video display housed in a 60 x 65 ft. structure and two outboard projection screens. Four Hippotizer Express machines drive video to a combination of Barco MiPIX and Element Labs VersaTubes. In one song, a tribute to ‘Dimebag’ Darrell Abbott, the late Pantera guitarist performs virtually with the live band. Hippotizer’s advanced audio/video synchronization makes this effect seem almost real.
For ten years Mode Studios has created complex multimedia designs for concerts, opera, theatre, and architectural applications. This year they are designing productions for, amongst others, LeAnn Rimes, Rock the Vote and Metal Messiah, an event that joins an all-star heavy metal band with the Boston Pops Orchestra.
“Hippotizer is our friend,” says Bob Bonniol, Mode Studios’ creative director. “It is user friendly and has a well developed ‘personality’ for use with all the major lighting consoles. Hippotizer is flexible and handles any media file. For Nickelback, multiple live cameras are routed to the Hippotizers in real time for IMAG purposes. Hippotizer really is a great performer.”
