Lab.gruppen on Tour with Pretenders

Martin Chambers, founding member and drummer for the Pretenders, recently took delivery of a Lab.gruppen C 10:4X amplifier to power his slightly unusual monitoring set-up on their current tour supporting Rod Stewart. Martin has long been a fan of Lab.gruppen and when time came to swap out the old iP Series amp he’d been using for years he of course asked again for Swedish craftsmanship and power-to-size.

Every drummer needs powerful and clear on-stage monitoring, especially when playing larger venues such as stadiums and arenas. And Martin Chambers is no exception. However, Martin’s monitoring is more physical than most. Tim Briscusse, tour manager for the Pretenders explains: “For his on stage monitoring, Martin expands on the usual wedges and drum fill and uses specially designed “thumper” speakers. These are bolted directly to his seat! This way he literally gets a kick out of his playing and finds that this unique set-up really helps him keep the beat.”

The two-rack space, 8.5 kg (18.75 lb) C 10:4X produces 250 watts per channel into 4, 8 or 16 ohms and has a universal power supply. The C 10:4X, normally used for permanent installations, is perfectly happy in a touring situation being built to the same exacting standards as Lab.gruppen’s FP+ Series touring dedicated amplifiers. The output of the C 10:4X perfectly suited the “thumper” speakers with the very high power ratings of the FP+ amplifiers not being required in this application.

Martin Chambers joined the Pretenders in 1978. He and Chrissie Hynde are now the only original members of this seminal group whose hits span three decades.
