PRG Europe Lights Joseph Revival
PRG Europe has supplied the lighting equipment for the revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which opened at the Adelphi on 17 July.
This is not the first time lighting designer Andrew Bridge and associate Michael Odam have worked on Joseph, nor PRG Europe project manager Peter Marshall – all were involved with the last West End production back in 1991, which starred Jason Donovan. This time the star of the show is Lee Mead, who won the part following the BBC show Any Dream Will Do.
The rig, installed under the supervision of production electrician Fraser Hall, includes some 70 Vari*Lite luminaires, over 200 ETC Source Fours, Wybron colour scrollers, Lycian followspots and other conventional lights, along with strobes, smoke and special effects.
The reworking involved a major desk transfer from the Artisan control console to a Wholehog II by programmers Stuart Porter and Pryderi Baskerville, who spent two weeks in PRG Europe’s demo theatre with the original VL2C and VL4 luminaires and their modern counterparts, the VL3000 and VL2000 lights, in order to complete the show transfer.
The show was a success before it even opened – tickets for the original six month run sold so fast that the show has been extended until June next year. Before opening night, the producers had banked £10m in receipts from advance ticket sales.
