Martin at Merkelsches Schwimmbad in Esslingen
Oskar Merkel – a successful Esslingen businessman – donated a public bath to the citizens of his southern German hometown in 1907. Inspired by the desire to promote welfare and health of the population, planning and building a bathhouse of his own also offered the opportunity for self-expression. Situated in the heart of Esslingen, the art nouveau design of the Merkelsches Schwimmbad has fascinated from its inception, having enjoyed great popularity for one hundred years.
In March 2007, the idea arose for a dynamic lighting scheme for the bathhouse’s arched ceiling. The development of the lighting design was handled quickly – colour is a natural complement to the art nouveau style. The technical implementation however - one that would not adversely affect the interior architecture - posed a particular challenge. Planning office Deyle, based in Stuttgart, conceived a custom luminaire assembly that would provide both the general downward lighting and the dynamic lighting on the ceiling. Besides the conventional white light illumination, the assembly comprises a DMX-controlled Martin color changing luminaire with a high-quality subtractive color mixing system.
Initially, Martin Architectural Alien 02 luminaires were designated. However, because of insufficient protection against moisture, company AVR Lichtsysteme was charged with changing over the entire assembly to Martin Architectural Exterior 200 fixtures. Offering the same technical features as the Alien 02, the Exterior 200 provides IP65 protection, and with a sturdy construction is more resistant against the adverse influences of chlorine and corrosion.
Eight Exterior 200s were integrated in a special metal construction, serving as a masked lighting unit. Lighting control takes place via a Creston media controller with touchscreen and graphical user interface, installed by Prosystems Schorndorf.
