360 Degree Turn for PSL in Trafalgar Square
PSL Music has acquired a reputation for delivering highly innovative visual staging technology, but the AV specification for the unique Becks Fusions Gallery is one of the most unusual, and also one of the first dedicated projects that PSL has completed in the contemporary arts world.
With a circumference of 18 metres, the 26 x 10m purpose-built touring space was supplied by Serious Structures. Unveiled in Trafalgar Square, it now begins a tour of UK cities, part of a cultural initiative by the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) and sponsored by Beck’s beer.
Visitors get free entry to the Gallery, sitting cross-legged on the floor to experience the Beck's Fusions programme, a series of specially–commissioned films made by visual artists in response to rare or unheard versions of songs by great bands and vocalists. These unique fusions span a wide range of visual approaches, from animation to video sampling and media art.
The programme forms an engaging, immersive experience, comprising the artists' interpretations of their chosen iconic song, presented in the Beck's Fusion's Gallery, a multi–screen, 360˚ environment which features a unique wraparound projection screen and a cluster of 16 Sanyo XP57 projectors, designed and supplied by PSL, the event services specialists.
PSL’s seamless screen, which forms a 2 metre-high band around the inside of the Gallery, proves to be the perfect medium to carry footage like Doug Fishbone’s surf celebration, which blends big-wave surfing with a disco-rework of Strauss’s ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’.
The media content was delivered by a pair of Hippotizer Stage media servers operating in Pan mode. All content for the Gallery was curated by Forma, a production agency which specializes in producing art-based projects. PSL worked closely with Forma and the artists to help format the artwork to the peculiarities of the gallery space. The Hippotizers were programmed by Richard Bagshaw and the projectionists were Julien Hogg and Fergus Noble. Pod Bluman project-managed the video delivery and specification for PSL Music.
