New Investment for Fineline

Bristol-based Fineline kicked off the new year by adding a new Graco Reactor E-XP2 plastic spray machine to its inventory of fabrication equipment.

More conventionally, this is used by companies in the roofing and wetroom sealing business, but Fineline is going to use it for a myriad of other ingenious stage, presentation and performance based applications.

Its primary function will be for spraying items like sets and props that have been machined from polystyrene on their 5-axis CNC router. They can also spray paint straight onto objects, and have a few new product ideas up their sleeves that will employ the machine.

When sprayed with plastic, objects become totally weatherised, so the process is ideal for the construction of exterior set pieces and other elements for films, attractions and theme parks.

The machine can spray plastic up to 1mm of material per pass, which dries in three seconds, allowing layering and greater thicknesses to be built with multiple passes.

The plastic it uses is polyurea elastomer, available in a variety of different colours and finishes.

The Graco machine is reliable and easy to use, offering accurate heating with precise temperature sensing. The control system has several useful features including full diagnostics, automatic shut down and job data reporting. A portable wheeled cart allows it to be moved in really close to the object that’s being coated.

“It’s part of our ongoing investment in the fabrication side of the business” explains Fineline’s Darren Wring, adding that it will also help increase the efficiency and speed of Fineline’s operation which enjoyed exceptional growth last year.

The company has just completed part of the set build for the Strictly Come Dancing Live tour via Total Solutions. Fineline supplied 500 Luxeon LEDs mounted in custom-machined wooden strips to dress the front of the main set staircase, plus 50 two-metre long barriers fabricated from aluminium composite di-bond material. The barriers are positioned between the audience and the dance floor, matt black on the audience side and silver-mirrored on the dance floor side. Fineline also supplied and fitted RGB LEDs along the front of the judges’ desk.
