PRG Europe Returns to Liverpool for Capital of Culture Projections

PRG Europe helped Liverpool celebrate its launch as European Capital of Culture for 2008, with large format projection onto the brand new Arena and Convention Centre (ACC) and the Jury’s Inn hotel, in front of the building.

On the weekend of 11 and 12 January, with over 50,000 people travelling to join the city’s residents in celebrating the launch, ACC Liverpool would be a prominent landmark. Phil Pickett, general manager of operations, suggested large projections of the logos of the venue’s sponsors. Deputy technical manager Alan Igbon says: “ACC Liverpool is sponsored by the Liverpool Echo and the Convention Centre by BT, so we arranged for PRG Europe to project the logos onto the side of the buildings.

“One of the projectors was sited on the top of a multi-storey car park, while the other was on top of a yet-to-be-completed hotel. PRG Europe came highly recommended by Giles Stanford at event implementation and delivery company SLS Group via the Liverpool Culture Company, who used them to provide lighting for the city’s 800th birthday.”

On the same weekend, PRG Europe was asked by Giles at SLS Group to project a giant Liverpool ’08 logo onto the front of the scaffold wrapper covering the hotel. He comments: “We had been asked by the Liverpool Culture Company to dress the area – putting up flags and other street decorations ¬– and as part of this I wanted a giant illuminated logo which people would see as they walked past the hotel site to a party which was being held at the Albert Dock.”

Project manager for PRG Europe Loz Wilcox adds: “We used a Pani BP6 projector to project the Echo Arena logo, and then the larger Pani BP12 projector to project onto the BT Convention Centre. The full colour BT logo needed to measure in excess of 90 square metres, so we really needed the extra image size and brightness you can achieve by using a 24cm slide in the 12K. We were given the artwork and brought in freelance projectionist Peter Wilms. He undertook all the perspective correction work required and produced the custom slides.”

The ACC Liverpool is a £164m project on the city’s famous King’s Waterfront, housing the 10,600 seat Echo Arena, and the BT Convention Centre, with 1,350 seats, a 3,725 sq m multi-purpose hall and a further 18 meeting rooms. Two hotels – Jury’s Inn and Staybridge Suites – with a combined total of 452 rooms, and a multi storey car park with 1,600 spaces will also be part of the campus when complete.
