Mick Hughes Winner of First TMA Lighting Design Award


Dame Judi Dench presented Bill Kenwright with the TMA Special Award for Individual Achievement at yesterday evening's TMA (Theatrical Management Association) Theatre Awards Presentation held at Hampstead Theatre, London.
Brenda Blethyn's Award for Best Performance in a Play completed a hat trick for the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester. Kate O'Flynn won Best Supporting Performance in a Play for her portrayal of Mary Tilford in The Children's Hour, with the same production winning Mick Hughes the very first TMA Award for Best Lighting Design supported by the Association of Lighting Designers.
Best Performance in a Musical went to Brian Conley for Chichester Festival Theatre's The Music Man, presenting his Award was Summer Strallen, currently starring in The Sound of Music at the London Palladium. Martin Ball took home the Best Supporting Performance in a Musical Award for his role as Mr Banks in the touring production of Mary Poppins.
Other winners included Michael Boyd, Best Director for the Royal Shakespeare Company's The Histories. Best New Play went to Lee Hall's The Pitmen Painters at Live Theatre, Newcastle while The National Theatre of Scotland's Black Watch won Best Touring Production. Liverpool Playhouse's Once Upon A Time At The Adelphi won Best Musical Production, Best Set Design went to Mike Britton for Lady From The Sea at Birmingham Rep. Best Show for Children and Young People went to Marcus Romer's adaptation of Anne Cassidy's novel Looking For JJ.
Principal sponsors of the event, The Stage Newspaper, gave their Award for Special Achievement in Regional Theatre to Latitude Festival, for "its ability to attract a broad range of age groups - in rather impressive numbers - to come and see performances ranging from hard-hitting plays, to dancing on a lake, to an RSC zombie thriller."
Achievement in Dance went to Theatre-Rites & Arthur Pita for Mischief, and Achievement in Opera was awarded to Opera North for its summer Shakespeare season of Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream and Romeo et Juliette.
