Litestructures Bucks the Trend with Holiday On Ice

While the rest of the world is, thanks to the Credit Crunch, putting holidays on ice, Litestructures has been putting the spectacular Holiday On Ice show into action. Arguably the world's biggest skating extravaganza, the production team once again selected Litestructures to furnish it with a spectacular stage set for their Energia Show.
This internationally acclaimed ice show, which is owned and managed by Dutch firm, Stage Entertainment, began its 2008 schedule in Hamburg on 6th November. Holiday On Ice's technical director Bogdan Lewko presented Litestructures with the challenge of designing and constructing the large and complex structures in conjunction with project manager, Hans Willems of W.I. Creation, working from an original design concept by award winning set designer, Bart Clement.
The final structure, following a concept inspired by the astronomical Saturn belt, comprises of a 20m diameter aluminium ring incorporating a 1.1m wide skating track made with a Teflon top. The structure also incorporates 2m wide inflatable perimeters to each side, and 24 Vari*Lite VL2500 moving heads. The challenge was unique, in being able to contain not just these loads but also the dynamic loads of skaters, hovering well above the ice, whilst the whole truss ring was motorized by computer controlled hoist systems. The design and structural studies were undertaken by Litestructures to ensure that the spectacular remained safe and reliable.
