W-DMX Visionaries Honoured

Wireless Solution Sweden AB congratulated Nathan Barmer and Jason McKinnon as the winners of the 2008 W-DMX Visionary Awards held during LDI in Las Vegas. Guests were invited to a Swedish party on the show floor to congratulate the winners while enjoying a vodka bar and plenty of meatballs.
The W-DMX Visionary Award is a special recognition of individuals in the professional lighting industry who were early adopters of W-DMX and had an immediate vision about how it could be applied to great advantage in their respective production environments.
The first award went to Nathan Barmer, Moving Lights Operator for the hugely popular show Le Rêve at Wynn Las Vegas. The theatre is designed in-the-round and involves a massive amount of flying and motion control. Two full universes of DMX are used for a moving carousel at the top of the theatre, with an additional universe for other flying elements. "Initially, another brand of wireless DMX was being used, but there was a noticeable lag in the timing of some of the major motion pieces," explained Barmer. "I had used W-DMX in the past and suggested we try that system instead. It worked perfectly and we have never had another problem."
Also awarded was Jason McKinnon from Electric Aura Lighting Design in Vancouver. McKinnon has been using W-DMX in a number of major motion pictures in Hollywood such as Fantastic Four 2: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and The Watchmen, in addition to Bon Jovi and a variety of other special projects. While Jason couldn't accept the award in person, Michael Dikinson of Christie Lites Vancouver accepted the award on his behalf. Michael and Jason recently used W-DMX on Pemfest in Pemberton, British Columbia with a crowd of 40,000 and 16 lighting towers with perfect results.
Nathan and Michael were good sports, posing for photos wearing Swedish flags and "köttbulle" T-shirts ("meatball" in Swedish!) They were also given Wireless Solution swag and a traditional Swedish Dala horse.
"We're so proud of the creative ways in which W-DMX has been used, making so many exciting projects possible," says Niclas Arvidsson, CEO for Wireless Solution, "but it's the clever minds behind these projects that we like to recognize, plus it's a great excuse to drink vodka and eat meatballs!"
