White Light Sponsors the First Best Lighting Designer Category

White Light has announced its sponsorship of the Best Lighting Designer category in the 2009 What's On Stage Theatregoers' Choice Awards. This is the first year that these awards, the winners of which are decided by votes from the theatregoing public, has featured a Lighting Design category. White Light is sponsoring the award for the next three years.

Run by whatsonstage.com, the popular theatre news website, and What's On Stage, its associated theatre magazine, the Theatregoers' Choice Awards have been running since 2002, covering principally show's running in London's West End, but with categories recognising work beyond the West End and around the UK. Anyone can nominate a person or production in any category through the whatsonstage.com website: this year, the nomination process runs until the end of November, with any production that opened between 1st December 2007 and 30th November 2008 eligible for nomination. Voting on the nominated productions, again through the whatsonstage.com website, runs from 8th December to 31st January 2009, with the winners announced during the week of 9th February 2009 and a Winners Concert held on 15th February. Last year saw over 25,000 people vote for their favourite shows and performers, the musical Hairspray winning the most categories.

"We were approached by the What's On Stage Team about sponsoring the event," comments White Light's managing director, Bryan Raven, "and we suggested that we'd love to be involved, particularly if they were to add a category recognising lighting design and lighting designers - which we are delighted that they have now done. Taken alongside the addition of a Best Lighting category to this year's TMA Awards and the long-established lighting category in the Olivier Awards, it shows an increasing recognition of the power that lighting has, and the value that the work of lighting designers bring to shows. While those designers will often claim that their work is at its best if it goes unnoticed we feel that their work does deserve recognition, and hope that this new category will help with that."

You can nominate your favourite lighting design - as well as your choices for all of the other categories - now at http://awards.whatsonstage.com, returning to vote for the nominated choices from December 8th. Making a nomination also gives you a chance of winning tickets to the award ceremony next year.
