5 Star Supplies Alpha Cases to Hawthorns
Leading flightcase manufacturer 5 Star Cases has recently supplied Leicestershire based Hawthorns with seventeen specialist trunks to house their new Clay Paky Alpha Spot 1200 moving light fixtures.
The ‘Split Body’ twin trunks feature a unique new design by 5 Star, complete with integral cradles which secure the lighting fixture when packed head down in the case, keeping them completely steady during transit.
The cradles are made from CNC machined plywood and feature supports rebated into the case for additional strength. The ‘load plates’ also have corner blocks to locate the ballast unit of the luminaire. The Alpha Spots are housed inverted in the cases and are further protected by polyethylene and polyester foam blocks.
The trunks also come fitted with two accessories boxes for hook clamps, spare lens attachments and other elements. These are incorporated into the space created around the inverted lamp head. Both halves of the trunk are mated together with the aid of additional CNC machined vertical locating bars.
Another new feature of this case design is the availability of separate front lids to convert the twin trunks to single units, making them ideal for smaller productions and easy loading. Also with portability in mind the trunks are built to ‘Quarter Pack’ dimensions, ensuring a snug four-wide truck pack for sensible touring logistics.
This design is proving extremely popular with touring and production companies like Hawthorns, as it enables the fixture to be removed from the trunk with minimal lifting effort – increasingly important in respect of tightening Health & Safety regulations.
Hawthorns’ 17 ‘Super Tour’ trunks were finished in their corporate navy blue laminate together with HTH screen printed identification.
Hawthorns recently supplied full lighting production including 140 CP Alpha Spots and their new trunks for the recent ‘Liverpool, the Musical’ event, marking the official opening of the city’s new venue, the Echo Arena Liverpool.
