Audio-Technica Endorsee Amy Winehouse Sweeps the Board at GRAMMY Awards

The 50th Annual GRAMMY Awards saw Audio-Technica endorsee Amy Winehouse pick up more awards than any other artist, collecting a total of five awards in the six categories for which she was nominated. Amy, an Audio-Technica Artist Series endorsee since she began performing exclusively on stage with the ATM710 condenser microphone last spring, performed two numbers – Rehab and Back to Black – live via satellite link during the awards ceremony in Los Angeles on 10 February, with the microphone.

Dave Swallow is Amy’s audio engineer, tour manager and tour consultant; he has counted her among his FOH credits since September 2006: “Amy has quite an individual tone to her voice. She has considerable presence in the 800 Hz to 3 kHz mid range. Most mics over pronounce this range, making her sound a little ‘honky’, because that is the frequency range they are designed to lift.

“We were trying out a lot of different mics to achieve more warmth in the lower end, and found an old Audio-Technica ATM89R, which sounded perfect but was discontinued. Audio-Technica suggested the new ATM710 vocal condenser from the new Artist Series. I just love it. It has the tone and response of a mic like the AE5400, but with the off axis rejection of a good stage dynamic; it’s smack in the middle of the two – just perfect.”

Dave also chose to equip the entire backline of Amy’s band with Audio-Technica mics. “Audio-Technica has the greatest range of consistently well engineered mics to allow you to do that,” he stated.

Amy picked up awards for Record of the Year, Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Pop Vocal Album and Female Pop Vocal Performance.
