ADLIB on Gabrielle
The first tour for ADLIB’s new dVDOSC system was Gabrielle, who has just had a run of UK theatres and concert halls, for which it was specified by FOH engineer Jamie Butterworth.
“It is an ideal high-definition system for the type of venues on the itinerary” he comments, adding that ADLIB came up with a good deal and also assigned two of their top crew – Steve Pattison and James Neale – to the project.
The standard system configuration was 12 boxes a side for left and right arrays, combined with four dV Subs on the floor along with eight of the new high output SB28 double 18” subs, all of which was fine tuned to deliver a clean, classy, refined sound to suit Gabrielle’s slick, funky performance.
The system was driven with the new LA8 DSP-laden amplifiers, which are also part of ADLIB’s recent L-Acoustics investment.
Butterworth – also the tour’s production manager – specified the Digidesign D-Show Venue FOH console, on which he utilised all the onboard effects, plus the Focusrite D2 and D3 compressors and EQ plug-ins, the Reverb 1 plug-in and Line 6 delays. All the EQ and time alignment was achieved via two Dolby Lake DLPs.
The Digidesign Venue is his desk of choice at the moment for many reasons, the primary one being, “It gives all the accessibility of analogue, it’s very intuitive, robust and built to tour”.
Butterworth worked with ADLIB previously on the Mylo tour in 2006, where he was very impressed with their service and attitude, so he was delighted that they came in with the winning package for this one.
Onstage, monitor engineer Rich Geduld opted to stay in the analogue domain, mixing with a trusty hands-on Midas XL3 console. He went this route as he likes the instant access and “grab-ablity” of the console, and being able to be ultimately spontaneous when needed.
XTA processors took care of the onstage graphic EQs and he used Drawmer gates, dbx compressors and an SPX 990 for reverb.
He ran a combination of four Sennheiser G2 IEM mixes and 13 ADLIB MP3 wedges utilised as four pairs (Gabrielle, bass, drums and backing vocalists) and five singles. Gabrielle – in addition to her IEM mix – also had side fills consisting of two ADLIB DF2s.
Gabrielle uses a Shure KSM9 hand held radio mic, picked for its headroom, natural sound and lack of sibilance, which enables them to get plenty of level.
ADLIB’s initial VDOSC investment included 32 V-DOSC, 24 SB28 SUBS, 24 dV-DOSC, four dV-SUB, eight ARCS and 32 LA8 amplified controllers.
