Harman Brands At The Heart Of ATRiuM, Glamorgan University’s Brand New Media Centre

An impressive list of Harman brands have been chosen to kit out ATRiuM, the ultra-stylish newly built University of Glamorgan campus in the centre of the Welsh capital which is already into its second term of teaching tomorrow’s creative industry professionals.
Branded as the Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries, the new faculty for 2000 students gives undergraduates every opportunity to interact with state-of-the-art equipment in a wide range of vocational courses including television, drama, radio and sound recording.
Budding actors have access to a 180-seat theatre equipped with Lexicon MPX1 & MPX400 digital effects processors, Crown CTs 2000/3000 amps and BSS 3088 Soundweb Lite control system, whilst for film students there is a digital and 16mm projection cinema, equipped with JBL 3632, 4645C & 8340A Cinema loudspeakers, and DSi 1000/2000 amplifiers controlled via BSS 3088 Soundweb Lite devices .
Specified by Bristol-based installation expert Sounds Commercial, the Harman inventory was not insignificant in this project. Damian Orritt, installation contracts manager oversaw the ATRiuM project from pitch to perfection, and explains their decision: “Harman were able to support us with a whole range of products and brands, which was really useful. It meant we only had one port of call, not only at the specification stage, but also when it came to the delivery of the system.”
It wasn’t just the convenience of Harman that drove the choice. “The Soundweb 3088 interface (programmed with Soundweb Designer Software) was chosen because integration with the AMX system permitted seamless transitions from the AV presentation mode to the theatre/cinema operation set up,” continues Orritt.
“In the Cinema the combination of Crown DSi Series DSP amplifiers and JBL’s THX rated 3632, 4645C and 8340A Series of cinema loudspeakers allowed us to easily set the system up as the DSi amps are pre-programmed with JBL EQ curves!”
Crown’s DSi cinema amplifiers provide onboard digital signal processing, including crossovers, EQ filters, delay and output limiting and have been designed to deliver perfectly matched performance with JBL cinema loudspeaker systems for the ultimate cinema solution.
Sounds Commercial worked closely with the architects during the final stages of the build, and were also involved in the design and installation of the TV studio, digital media suites and performance spaces in the £35-million faculty building.
Professor Peter Robertson, the new Faculty’s Dean says: “For £35 million you get the best – and we’ve brought the best to Cardiff. What we have is two full size television studios, a radio station, newsroom facilities – everything you can think of.”
The building also houses design studios, theatre and music performance rehearsal spaces, analogue recording studios, photography and journalism spaces, animation studios and computer labs, underlining its position as a specialist 21st-century media production, design and performance school.
