Latest 3D and Projection Technologies put Under the Spotlight

The latest developments in state of the art 3D and projection technologies will be the focus of an event to be held at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) next week.

The two-day conference, organised by the UK Displays and Lighting Knowledge Transfer Network, will include speakers from industry, including the CEOs of some of the leading companies specialising in the field, and presentations of the latest cutting edge research being carried out by DMU researchers.

The event, 'Investigating 3D Technologies and Projection Displays', will take place on Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 March with day one focusing on 3D and day two on projection displays.

The first day will see speakers from industry discuss how 3D technologies are being applied in their specific fields, for example, in the medical and security sectors. It will feature a keynote speech from Professor Mohammad Ibrahim of DMU's Fused Media lab.

Professor Ibrahim will talk about the Fused Media lab and the work carried out there. Fused media is the use of technology to blend the physical with the virtual. It holds massive potential in many different areas, from educational displays to commercial applications.

Nicholas Fox, the CEO of Image Scan Holdings, will talk about how 3D imaging is being used in the security industry. His company specialises in 3D applications related to x-ray inspection and screening, including the examination of suspect packages.

Dr Colin Urquhart, the CEO of Dimensional Imaging, will discuss how his company's human body 3D surface image capture technology is used in both the medicine and entertainment industries.

The technology was originally developed for medical applications but is now helping video games developers meet production challenges by significantly reducing the time and effort required to achieve the ever increasing level of detail and realism in modern games.

The second day is devoted to projection technology and will look at a variety of developments in the sector, including the use of holographic projection and the development of digital cinema projectors.

Robert Simpson, director of Electrosonic, will give the day two keynote speech. Electrosonic provides display systems for many applications. These include corporate presentation systems, command and control installations, museum and exhibition displays and theme park rides.

His talk, 'Projection Technology Review – A User's Perspective', will review the evolution of electronic image projection technology, from light valves to lasers. It will show how new technologies have opened up new applications, including those requiring 24 hours a day operation. It will also provide an update on the projection requirements of ‘Digital Cinema’ which differ greatly from ‘video’ projection.

The second day will also feature a presentation by DMU's Phil Surman on the unique work carried out by the University's Imaging and Displays Research Group. The group has been involved in four major EU funded projects, including two in which it is the lead partner, exploring different aspects of 3D television. It is currently developing a pioneering 3DTV system that can be viewed by multiple users at the same time without the need for 3D glasses. Viewers will be able to move around the room and still see the 3D image wherever they sit.

Professor Philip Moore, Head of Research for DMU's Faculty of Computing Sciences and Engineering, which is hosting the event, said: "De Montfort University is delighted to be working with the UK Displays and Lighting Knowledge Transfer Network in hosting this important national conference on 3D Technologies and Projection Displays.

"The Faculty of Computing Sciences and Engineering is conducting a range of exciting research in these fields and we are very pleased to welcome specialist speakers and delegates with related interests."

Robert Sharpe, coordinator for the UK Displays and Lighting Knowledge Transfer Network, said: "We look forward to educating and entertaining our guests at what promises to be an extremely interesting and informative event. This is one of a series of events organised by the UK Displays and Lighting Knowledge Transfer Network, covering displays, plastic electronics and lighting."

Delegates at the conference will also be given the chance to tour DMU's new Creative Technology Studios (CTS).

Launched last November, the CTS is one of the most advanced recording and broadcast studio facilities in a UK university.

The £3.7 million facility features state of the art equipment, including video, audio and radio production suites, fully-equipped recording studios and laboratories with the very latest broadcast and audio analysis technology.

Attendance at the conference costs £95 plus VAT and can be booked by emailing info@ukdisplaylighting.net or by calling 01908 276665.
