Avo for e.tv Johannesburg

Avo for e.tv Johannesburg

e.tv Studios in Johannesburg South Africa has just taken delivery of a new Avolites ART2000t dimmer rack from South African distributor DWR Distribution.
This joins an existing 48-way ART2000t and a 12-way 7K ART dimmer which is specially customised for e.tv's requirements including 12 32A single phase outlets and Camlok in and outs as well as being built to the full touring spec. These were originally purchased for a wrestling show, with the 12-way intended to run 5k Fresnels.
e.tv is the fifth terrestrial TV channel in South Africa and the first privately owned but free-to-air television station in the country and the only terrestrial TV channel in the country producing independent news broadcasts.
The dimmers were specified by lighting director Mauritz Neethling. For the last four years, the original ARTs have been used to run lighting on the long-running soap, ‘Scandal' which was housed at e.tv.
Later on this year, they will be used to run 24 Hour News, a completely new channel - and the first 24 hour African only news channel in the country - scheduled for launch in the autumn.
Neethling specified Avo dimmers because "they are the Rolls Royce of touring systems - reliable, practical and with an unbeatable track record."
For 24 Hour News, the ART's interchangeability  - any one of the three racks can be interchanged and easily configured for a specific job   - and reliability factors were key considerations. They need dimmers that they know will just go on and on working without any glitches.
The ART 2000's Socapex system has been useful on several occasions. For ‘Scandal', they ran a medium sized dimmer set up for the studio and were able to swap different lights in and out according to which ones were being used for different scenes via the dual Socapex system.
From a supplier's angle, DWR's Duncan Riley says: "Avo dimmers have proved absolutely rock solid time and again. That's exactly what you need - a dimmer that you can shut in a room, lock the door and know you don't have to worry about it."
