Playing Safe
Hearing damage caused by exposure to noise at work is permanent and incurable. All excessive noise whether it is from machinery or music is a hazard that leads to increasing deafness and tinnitus.
From April 2008 the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 will bring in new, more stringent safety measures for all workplaces where live music is played and for restaurants, bars, public houses, discos, nightclubs, and live dramatic or dance performances where recorded music is played. Under these Regulations everyone will have a responsibility to help ensure that they and anyone working for them or with them are not at risk of hearing damage because of excessive noise during the course of their work.
The Institute of Acoustics (IOA) is holding Playing Safe, a one-day meeting on 16 April 2008 at the Barbican Centre in London for those working in music and entertainment with responsibilities under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations. Speakers from the Health and Safety Executive, the Musicians’ Union and the music and entertainment industry will provide guidance on the duties under these new Regulations and practical noise control measures that reduce the risks. They will address the issues, risks and noise control measures for orchestras, pubs and clubs, schools, large indoor and outdoor venues, the use of personal hearing protection by musicians and keeping support staff and technicians safe.
The meeting is aimed at those working in music and entertainment who will have management duties under the regulations, such as landlords, venue and event managers, band and orchestra leaders, heads of music schools and colleges. It is also relevant to those needing to implement practical noise controls such as health and safety professionals, and technicians and it will be of interest to environmental health officers with enforcement responsibilities under the regulations.
