Austria\'s ATRIO Imposes New Standards in the Alps

ATRIO, in the area of Carinthia in the south of Austria, is the region's newest shopping centre. Opened in summer 2007 in the town of Villach, it is the largest, most beautiful and, above all, most spectacular shopping mall in the Alps-Adriatic region. With a sales area of 28,000 m², it offers 82 attractive shops and catering enterprises, and features exceptional architecture, both indoors and out.

An outstanding eye catcher inside the centre is a dynamic lighting scheme along a corridor of escalators, a multi-coloured illumination realized by use of specially developed Martin Alien 02 Downlights. The Alien 02 Downlight is a modified model of the customary Alien 02 colour changer, housing a 150 W halogen metal halide lamp, CMY colour mixing system and mechanical dimmer. The special design was developed in collaboration with Bartenbach LichtLabor of Aldrans, Austria.

In direct comparison to LED devices, the Alien 02 Downlight provides several advantages such as a high luminous intensity, 9000 hour lamp life and easily achievable lamp replacement.

"The special challenge with the installation of the dynamic downlights was to enable an effective color contrast around the escalator portals, despite the dominating conventional lighting," says Martin partner Robert Greis of Licht & Ton in Regensburg.

"Admittedly, the new LED technology was very attractive for all of us, but brilliance and luminous intensity in the different hues of the LED gear left much to be desired," he continues. "The Alien 02 Downlight however delivers sufficient intensity of light, especially because of its highly saturated colours. By selecting the correct intensive colour shades in combination with uniform illumination of the portals, the lighting yields an aesthetic and representative look. A 'patchy' lighting with unclean colours would appear trashy, and wouldn't motivate passers-by to go for a shopping stroll."

Outside the ATRIO's entrance, an inverted glass pyramid illuminated by six Martin MAC 250 Entour colour and effect luminaires, draws attention to the mall. Set on a cycle determined by the management of the centre, the luminaires create a variety of lighting patterns and colour projections at the touch of a button, thus enhancing the dynamic appearance of the centre.
