Carrère Studios Goes All Robe

Studio 8 of the Carrère Studios at La Plaine St Denis, Paris, has been kitted out with over 140 Robe moving lights at the request of cutting edge DoP David Seligmann-Forest.
The all-Robe rig was installed by Impact Evénement and includes 15 ColorSpot 1200E ATs, 26 ColorWash 1200E ATs, three white ColorWash 250 ATs, 90 ColorWash 575 XTs, two white ColorWash 575 XTs and six ColorSpot 700E ATs.
The majority of the lights are hung in the studio's ceiling on special trussing - also supplied by Impact - and the white units are specifically used for floor level lighting of sets and other scenic elements.
The move followed Seligmann-Forest's extensive use of Robe on the 2007 hit reality show, ‘Secret Story' and also on ‘Le Grand Soir d'Eliane et Francis'. He comments: "I really like the Robe brand and am very happy with the equipment and the relationship with Impact Evénement. They are always ready to listen to what I want - which is essential for a director of photography."
The ColorSpot 700E ATs are proving particularly impressive - compact and incredibly powerful and versatile thanks to the 15 - 60 degree zoom, optimised MSR 700W bulb and electronic ballast. Seligmann-Forest says: "It's a brilliant unit - great colours, and the zoom and aperture make it a truly dynamic moving light for all types of shows."
The Carrère Studios' Robe fixtures are rigged in the customised trussing gantries supplied by Impact Evénement, which are designed to match the layout of the studio scenery in the shape of waves, rings and curves. The trussing sections were assembled individually before being positioned in the roof - a huge job for Stéphane Fleury and the Impact Evénement team.
In the gantries, Seligmann-Forest has alternated the ColorSpot and ColorWash 1200E ATs and makes much use of their gobo selections and strong beams when lighting shows. The ColorWash 575s are positioned all over the trusses maximising coverage across the studio floor.
Robe was also chosen for its reliability. Seligmann-Forest was very impressed with this factor when using the fixtures last summer. He had 220 Robes on ‘Secret Story' and no technical issues at all. "These machines are tough," he says, adding, "In the permanent rig, the lights have only needed the occasional bulb-change and no other maintenance whatsoever - which has definitely not been the case with other brands!"
Seligmann-Forest's career is very much in its ascendency. Having worked with some of the greatest DoP's in TV, he's now carving out a name and a distinctive creative lighting style of his own - and enthusiastically embracing Robe as his choice of moving light.
The lights are programmed and run from the Impact Evénement's grandMA console. Also on Seligmann-Forest's lighting team are lighting director Pierre Redon, console operator Xavier Fossier, moving light tech Forward Hall, electricians Patrick Lelec, Guillaume Acani and Thierry Petit and rigger Vincent Garrick.
