West London based lighting rental company Colour Sound Experiment supplied lighting for seven performance stages and seven areas of the surrounding trees, foliage and greenery - involving over 170 single light-sources - at the 2008 Latitude Festival.

The UK's most sought-after boutique festival is set in one of the most picturesque event environments in the country - Henham Park, Southwold Suffolk - tucked away in the gently undulating hills and acres of historic parkland designed in the 1790s by Humphrey Repton. It is currently the seat of the 6th Earl of Stradbroke.

Highlighting the natural beauty of the location has always been a priority, and Colour Sound now has the lighting scheme down to a fine art, having been involved in Latitude since its start in 2006.

Colour Sound's Haydn Cruickshank says; "Latitude has a very special vibe and ambience. It allows us to do something different from standard stage lighting, and we're really excited to be part of the team that's made it such a success."

The key natural features illuminated are two 100 metre tree lines, one behind the VIP area, and the other behind Tent 1 and a 200 metre tree line running along one side of the large lake separating the parklands and main arenas from the wooded area, in-the-woods stages and camping at the back of the woods.

These were lit with a combination of 58 halogen fixtures, a selection of blue and green 400 Watt SON floodlights, 20 PAR 64s and 15 Studio Due 2.5kW CityColors.

In the main arena, 16 single mature trees were up-lit with a mix of 16 green SONs and 30 PAR 64s, their eclectic shapes, knarled trunks and complex branch formations highlighted as the site was enveloped in darkness.

In the family camping area, the Colour Sound crew ran out 18 metres of fairy lights along the trees. Selected individual campsite trees were illuminated with more green and red Sons, as was the Canopie Area.

The Colour Sound crew of nine, led by Rob "Bobby Dazzler" Davies started rigging lights plus several kilometres of cabling on the Monday in what was arguably the most arduous and protracted jobs on site ... But all the hard work was well worth it with the stunning results.

Colour Sound also supplied more standard stage lighting packages to the Comedy/Guilty Pleasures, Cabaret, Music & Film and Poetry arenas, the Book Club, the In The Woods and Saddlers Wells/On The Lake Stage.

The Comedy arena lighting was hung on a back truss suspended by SuperTowers and four upright truss sections downstage, and run by Rob Davies using an Avo Pearl desk. It included 12 Robe ColorSpot and ColorWash 575E AT moving lights, eight PixelLine LED battens, Ministars and ETC Source Four profiles.

Over in the Cabaret/Pandora's Playground arena Tony Wilson was operating another Pearl, controlling six Martin MAC 250 wash fixtures and another six MAC 250 Entours, plus Source Four profiles and PARs.

The Music & Film tent featured six Robe ColorSpot 700E ATs, assorted PARs, LED Pars and Ministars and was run by Richard Gilson.

The In the Woods stage, ensconced in a cosy hollow with heavy tree coverage, featured theatre performances during the day and DJs in the evening session, which fired up at about 9pm and kept going till 3am, catching all the late night revellers and party people. Lighting here was run by Karl Wustrau and featured PARs, 575 Scanners and Mini Stars.

The Book Club and Poetry arenas were very simply lit with Parnels and profiles on Manfrotto stands, run by Abdul Kareem Feshitan. They both proved highly popular places to be, with the action-packed Poetry line up featuring Atilla The Stockbroker, Paul MacJoyce, Kate Tempest, Kat Francois and many others in a programme running from 11am to 2am daily.

The Saddlers Wells stage was actually built on the lake with its foundations in the water, and hosted dance and music performances. Saddlers Wells theatre supplied some of their own lighting equipment, and Colour Sound supplemented with PARs, CityColors and another Pearl console, operated by Jaz Bullah.

Latitude is one of numerous festivals being supplied by Colour Sound Experiment this summer.
