Merlin PA Takes RSS Digital Snakes to the Races

Sound rental company Merlin PA is using the RSS by Roland Digital Snake at the heart of its PA systems, one of the first in the UK to snap up the portable digital solution which offers high-resolution 24 bit / 96 kHz audio quality along single Cat5e cables.
With two complete S-4000 systems in inventory, Merlin PA typically uses two stageboxes and two monitor pull-offs, providing up to 80 channels of digital audio. "Usually our Cat5 runs are 100 metres; however, with another gigabit switcher at the 100m mark, we have extended out to 200 metres," explains Graham White from Merlin.
"The Snakes have proved themselves absolutely bomb-proof. We had them up and running within 10 minutes of being delivered. They cost a bit more money than the ‘orrible analogue copper cable alternative, but they are completely cost-effective. If you run over this multicore in a van, you can still use it."
Merlin PA has a contract to provide PA for the popular Newmarket Nights: evening horse-race meetings held at Newmarket Racecourse which are followed by a concert. Artists performing this year include Madness, Jools Holland, Boyzone and Girls Aloud. Organised by Liz Hobbs Concerts & Events Ltd, part of the Liz Hobbs Group (LHG), this open-air formula is repeated at other leading tracks including Aintree, Ayr, York, Haydock, Epsom and Sandown, under an exclusive entertainment, concerts and development contract with Jockey Club Racecourses, which owns racecourses all over the UK.
Merlin has successfully used the RSS Snakes at several of these events, most recently for Bryan Adams who attracted a record-breaking crowd of 25,000. "This is the first item of Roland pro-audio kit for us and we've had a very positive experience;it's clean, and works every time, and it has given us total reliability."
