Tannoy at Clarion Airport Hotel Bergen

Tannoy at Clarion Airport Hotel Bergen

The new Clarion Hotel Bergen Airport is situated in Flesland, on the outskirts of Bergen - Norway's second city - and is one of the first hotels of its type to be built in Norway. It is a mere 50 yards away from the terminal of Bergen Airport, making it the first authentic ‘airport hotel' in the area, allowing you to almost literally land in your hotel room. Music is a big feature of the Clarion too, claiming to be the only ‘Music Hotel' in Bergen, with live musicians performing most nights and a distinct musical theme is apparent on each of the hotel's floors.

The Clarion also boasts some of the most impressive conference facilities in the country with over 1600m2 of dedicated floor space across several meeting rooms, handling up to 1200 conference visitors each day. These conference rooms are a key part of the new hotel's overall market offering and are designed to meet the needs of modern business with large window sections, high ceilings, ultra-modern technical equipment and first class staff. A crucial part of this technical specification was the audio installation, which would be required to facilitate effective multimedia presentations and deliver loudness and clarity in both speech and music. That's where Tannoy comes in, with a range of premium in-ceiling and surface mount loudspeakers designed specifically with the corporate AV market in mind.

Specified and installed by Norway's leading sound and lighting installers, AVAB CAC - who have a local office in Bergen - as well as Oslo and Lillehammer, Tannoy products serve five large conference rooms as well as the elevator lobbies, reception area and the hotel's piano bar.

Over 100 x CMS501 DC Pi in-ceiling monitor speakers were installed across the 5 conference rooms (which can be re-partitioned into either one or two larger rooms) along with 12 x CVS6 in-ceiling speakers and 16 x Di8 DC surface mount loudspeakers, delivering a more than capable solution for both music and speech which blends seamlessly into the modern décor of the hotel.

Elsewhere CMS501 DC Pi's were used to provide sound to the reception and the areas outside the elevators across the five floors of the building. These high power and high sensitivity ceiling monitors, containing a 130mm (5.00") ICT transducer, are specifically designed for applications requiring the combination of premium sonic quality for music and speech reinforcement and exceptional reliability - making them the perfect choice for the Clarion Hotel Bergen. The CMS501 DC Pi is designed to fit into zinc plated, fully wired back cans specifically developed to be pre-installed into newly constructed, non-suspended ceilings - leaving the speaker to be inserted at the final system commissioning stage of the install.

The 16 Di8 DC speaker cabinets in the conference areas were specified in white, in keeping with the interior aesthetics, and provide a higher output and wider frequency bandwidth audio source for these spaces. The 200mm (8.00") Tannoy Dual Concentric in the Di8 DC is a point source drive unit design, ensuring a wide and controlled dispersion for optimum coverage; this while avoiding the massive loss of energy in the vertical plane, at the crossover frequency, inherent in two-way discrete designs. This means that the speaker can be mounted in either vertical or horizontal orientations on walls or ceilings with no compromise to performance.

The hotel's piano bar demanded a more powerful audio installation, and to meet these requirements, a pair of Tannoy V8s, a single VS10 BP and 4 x i6 MP speakers were deployed. The V8 is an installation loudspeaker of the finest quality that provides a compact, yet punchy, solution for high quality music while its conical coverage pattern makes the V8 an ideal low profile stage monitor; the exceptionally wide dispersion allowing the performer greater freedom of movement than allowed by conventional horn loaded designs.

Meanwhile some bottom end is provided by the VS10 BP, utilising a single high efficiency 250mm (10.00") drive unit in a compact and sturdy, black or white painted MDF cabinet. The design allows discreet placement, for instance unobtrusively incorporated into fixed furnishings such as underneath seating. The install placement is made even easier as the design incorporates moveable bass port tubes and blanking plates that can be swapped from the side to the end panel, allowing the unit to be installed in various orientations.

AVAB CAC's Trond Kristoffersen was happy with the end results, as he explains: "We had no hesitations in opting for Tannoy's CMS501 DC Pi in-ceiling speakers, the combination of superior quality sound, reliability and ease-of-installation made them the perfect choice for this new-build project." He went on to praise the Di series, "When it comes to satisfying a dual requirement for clarity of speech and reasonably loud music while remaining discrete, the Di8 was the obvious speaker for the job."

"The client is absolutely delighted with the results, both in terms of how the system blends into the hotel interior spaces as well as how good it sounds. We're also very satisfied with the Tannoy speakers we chose for the job and will have no qualms in specifying them again," continues Trond.

Amplification for the Tannoy speakers is provided by Lab.gruppen and is controlled by a pair of Yamaha DME-24N digital mixing engines.
