TMA Announces New Award for Best Lighting Design
This year the Theatrical Management Association's Theatre Awards is to have a new award for Best Lighting Design.
Since their establishment in 1990, the TMA has presented the Theatre Awards to celebrate the excellence in performance and production in theatre, opera and dance throughout the UK. The awards champion the high standard of professional, specialist work which contributes to and supports the success of the performing arts. This year the Award for Best Lighting Design joins the current 13 categories of awards in recognition of the particular creative contribution made by lighting designers to productions originated in theatres and arts venues across the country.
"The contribution made by lighting designers to the artistic excellence of productions has long been recognised by those working in the performing arts industry. We are delighted that this new award, presented by the TMA, at last gives public recognition to their skill and craft. We are particularly pleased that this award is made with the support of the Association of Lighting Designers," said Derek Nicholls, president of the TMA.
Chair of the Association of Lighting Designers, Rick Fisher, said: "The Association of Lighting Designers is delighted to be supporting the new TMA Theatre Award for Best Lighting Design. Excellent work is flourishing around the UK and has until now gone unrecognized publicly. This TMA award will celebrate the immense skill and creativity brought to productions and the high calibre of lighting design talent presently employed. It will also give theatres and producers an additional reward for fostering lighting design excellence."
The TMA Theatre Awards 2008, will once again be supported by The Stage and Nominations for the Awards will be announced in The Stage on 30 September.
The Awards Ceremony will be held at the Hampstead Theatre, London on Sunday 26 October 2008.
