AXYS Loudspeakers a Hit with Sizzling Hot Mikado Tour
As one of the UK's most innovative producing theatres, the Watermill Theatre is constantly looking to make the most of its resources. Their latest production of "Hot Mikado" by Strictly Come Dancing judge, Craig Revell Horwood and Tony award-winning orchestrator Sarah Travis is no exception. There is no doubt that Gilbert and Sullivan didn't envisage their production to be updated using Big Band, Swing and Gospel at its musical core, but this acclaimed production does just that - and with great success. You might envisage a luxurious orchestra and cast but, true to the Watermill's ideals of making the most of everything, the cast of 15 are also the orchestra! The result is an electrifying show that had toes tapping, fingers clicking and enjoyed standing ovations almost nightly.
Delivering these musical styles with a modern sound was the challenge that sound designer Chris Full, Andy Pink (Associate) and FOH mixer Matt McCarthy took on. The show started life at the Watermill where it played for two weeks before a UK tour ending in Spain! Due to the diversity of the theatres on tour, Full used AXYS Scope loudspeakers as key elements to deliver the required punch and excitement at all levels from the smaller orchestral arrangements through Big Band to Rock/ Gospel whilst providing a consistent sound character through the full dynamic range of the show and across all of the individual venues.
AXYS Scope loudspeakers were chosen for their pure power, musicality and sonic clarity which combined with their ease of use and built in DSP made it a breeze to install them in the limited time available to set up each date on tour. A combination of Scope T2115 and B07 units were used on the tour. The T-2115 is a 3-way full range loudspeaker with built in amplification and DSP and the B-07 is a single 18" subwoofer with built in amplification and DSP. All units were controlled and configured via a RS-485 network using Duran Audio's WinControl software, which allows users access to the on board delay, equalisation, level control and other features.
The loudspeakers immediately impressed associate sound designer Andy Pink who was using them for the first time: "It was a real pleasure to use the AXYS Scope T-2115's. They were easy to set up and immediately sounded warm and powerful with an extended low end that meant subwoofers were often unnecessary. The excellent software, which integrates seamlessly via the network and controls all aspects of how the speaker responds in the room, is quick and intuitive."
