Meyer Sound Covers All Bases at 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards in Berlin
The power of Meyer Sound covered all bases when the MTV Europe Music Awards 2009 returned to Berlin in November, from the awards show in the O2 World to U2's outdoor concert at the Brandenburg Gate in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of Berlin Wall. As the star-studded guests moved to Universal Records¹ after-show party, the new JM-1P arrayable loudspeaker ensured headroom for performers Jan Delay, Patrice, and Culcha Candela. In the 17,000-capacity O2 World, Kate Perry, Beyoncé, Green Day, Leona Lewis, and Tokio Hotel were the stars at the main awards event. Every syllable of their performances was heard with clarity thanks to a Meyer Sound system provided by Cologne-based Showtec.
Configured with consideration to a dual stage design, the Meyer Sound system was handled by Showtec director Dieter Cramer and production manager Peter A. Mankowski with system design by Derick Ziba. The main system included four hangs of four MICA and five M'elodie line array loudspeakers and two 600-HP subwoofers. Another two arrays with ten MICA loudspeakers, two
M¹elodie loudspeakers, and three 600-HP subwoofers were flown above the centre stage towards the audience on the floor and the bleachers. The crowd surrounding the stages was covered by four MSL-4 and UPA-1P loudspeakers, 16 M1D line array loudspeakers, and 700-HP subwoofers. Matrix3 audio show control provided a fully integrated digital audio environment for the show. At the Brandenburg Gate, just a few kilometers away from the O2 World, a massive crowd of 10,000 fans filled the grounds for a free concert of U2 and their surprise collaboration with Jay-Z through a Meyer Sound system.
Coordinated by Procon project manager Kai Reiss, the sound setup featured two arrays of 11 MILO line array loudspeakers each, augmented by 16 700-HP subwoofers and four CQ-2 loudspeakers. For the spectators on Berlin's Unter den Linden boulevard, two fixed and two motorized delay lines with MSL-4 and DS-4P loudspeakers and 650-P subwoofers provided additional reinforcement. Marcus Mechelhoff coordinated the event for Mediapool event services, and system design was provided by IT Audio¹s Ivo König and Til Schwartz.
At Universal Records' after-show party, coordinated by Mario Dries and Tobias Fancé of event agency Edisto (www.edisto.de), the powerful coverage of the JM-1P arrayable loudspeakers proved essential for a sensational nightclub experience. The system was set up at the Hangar2 venue in the former Tempelhof airport under the supervision of Berthold Theel, CEO of bbs... production & design GmbH. Featuring four flown JM-1P arrayable loudspeakers per side and ten 700-HP subwoofers in a cardioid formation, the system utilized the exception horizontal control of the JM-1P to focus the energy on the floor level so that those at the bar could talk comfortably with each other.
On stage, four UM-1P and two MJF-212A stage monitors provided clear and powerful monitoring for the DJs. Two additional UPJunior VariO loudspeakers served as front fill while the VIPs on the balcony were covered by six flown delayed UPA-1P loudspeakers. The complete system was driven by a Galileo loudspeaker management system comprising two Galileo 616 processors and tuned with a SIM 3 audio analyzer.
