FX Takes BRIT School to Top of the Class with Pro Tools HD and ICON D-Control

FX Sales has continued its ongoing relationship with the BRIT School, upgrading the music department's recording studios with the addition of two Pro Tools HD3 Accel Systems with 192 I/Os, a 32 Channel ICON D-Control ES (supplied by Digidesign), Digidesign C24 Pro Tools control surface, Digidesign preamps, a Digidesign/PMC RM2 5.1 monitor array with a PMC TLE1S active sub, an SNS Global San X4 hard drive system, plasma screens, Waves Mercury TDM V6, TC System 6000 mastering bundle and a range of plug-ins and software.

In addition, FX also supplied a Mac Pro running Final Cut Studio 2, Genelec 5.1 monitors, a Plasma screen and related accessories into the BRIT School's DVD authoring suite.

"We received funding and decided to upgrade to Pro Tools HD," says Declan Cunningham, assistant director of music. "FX has always been supportive, having overseen the first install in 2001 and ultimately it comes down to relationships. I'm busy teaching and helping run the department, so there are areas I need supporting in, such as advice about what's new, what's good, what's bad, etc. The guys at FX work out in the real world and they'll keep me updated, offering solid, friendly advice which is really important for us here. The success of this upgrade project is in no small part due to the effort and commitment of FX's Pat Roche."

Cunningham was looking for some technology that could handle post production while also providing a good mix centre. "When I saw the D-Control it was no contest really," he says. I really wanted to stick with Pro Tools because the aim of this place is to get the students using industry standard equipment. They're seeing equipment they would only get to see in high end studios."

The studio is used by the BRIT School's music students on the BTEC National Diploma in Music, for the Recording Techniques unit. Classes are taught every day, with groups limited to 12 to maximise hands on experience. "It's a small part of their qualification but we invest in it very heavily," says Cunningham.

The studio can also be booked for individual projects, with recording supervised by experienced students who form a floating group of voluntary engineers. The school's dramatic and musical productions can also be recorded, as 48 digital lines link the studio to the main theatre.
