Tannoy's Double Scoop at InAVation Awards 2009

Tannoy lived up to their illustrious reputation by picking up an important gong at the recent EMEA+ InAVation Awards 2009, held at the Okura Hotel in Amsterdam on the eve of the Integrated Systems Europe Show. The Scottish based company won the ‘Most InAVative Loudspeaker product for Commercial use' for their QFlex digitally steerable array range, launched to the market in the latter half of last year.
With over 180 product entries across 11 categories, this year's InAVation Awards attracted over 12,000 industry votes, so the competition for one of the illustrious gongs was fierce. Tannoy's most recent addition to its extensive range of commercial loudspeaker solutions was up against some tough finalists which included Renkus Heinz with their own beam-steering product as well as the likes of Community and d&b audiotechnik, so the award was particularly well received.
Tannoy's director of business development, Graham Hendry - who has been at the core of, and instrumental in, QFlex's development - accepted the award from Richard Lawn of category sponsors ‘Pro Audio Middle East' to rapturous applause, albeit mainly from the Tannoy table!
Hendry later had this to say about the award winning product: "After more than five years of intensive and challenging work, this is a great first piece of recognition for everything that we believe QFlex represents... another milestone in our loudspeaker development process and a classic example of the sort of innovation that Tannoy has become renowned for."
Following hot on the heels of the Technology Award, Tannoy celebrated again with a noted involvement in one of the Project Awards, for their part in the Best Corporate Facility winner - Unicredit Bank's UniManagement Centre in Turin, Italy. Working in partnership with US architect Matt Taylor and experienced systems designer Claudio Mazzucchelli, Tannoy's Italian distributor Prase Engineering supplied the audio system, which was installed by Meeting Room and Telesystem. The purpose of the project was to provide Unicredit group with a purpose designed multi-functional management training facility at the bank's Turin base. Behind the austere façade of one of the most illustrious historic buildings in the centre of Turin, attendees are hosted in a unique facility, which occupies the entire third floor and a 1,600 square metre space on the ground floor.
For the large groups gathered under the armature, with the speaker in the centre and participants all around, sessions are truly immersive, thanks to the impressive array of AV hardware installed. The main Tannoy audio system comprises a main centre cluster with six V8 enclosures, four (L&R) V12 enclosures, four VS15 BP subwoofers, and two series of Arena delay speakers: one with eight and the other with twelve.
Mazzucchelli explains the choice of loudspeaker enclosures: "Thanks to the use of loudspeaker enclosures with point source Dual Concentric technology, we achieved excellent intelligibility results in an environment that was anything but ideal from an acoustic point of view."
