Congratulations, Olivier Award Winners
The Society of London Theatres recently announced the winners of the 33rd Laurence Olivier Awards, at a ceremony held at the Grosvenor House Hotel. As always, White Light would like to congratulate the winners and all of the nominees, the company having been involved with many of the nominated productions during the year.
The winner of the Best Lighting Design category was always going to be either Paule Constable or Neil Austin this year, with each designer receiving two of the four nominations in the category. It was Paule who ultimately received the prize, for her design for The Chalk Garden at the Donmar Warehouse; this is the third time she has won the lighting Olivier, with a further four nominations to her credit including the acclaimed production of War Horse, currently transferring from the National Theatre to the New London.
In the other technical categories, awards went to Gareth Fry for his sound design for Black Watch at the Barbican, to Todd Rosenthal for his set design for August: Osage County at the National, and to Tom Piper and Emma Williams for their costume design for the RSC's Histories at the Roundhouse.
Black Watch also won in the Best New Play, Best Director (John Tiffany) and Best Theatre Choreographer (Steven Hoggett) categories, with The Histories also receiving the awards for Best Revival and Best Company Performance.
Actors involved with the Donmar Warehouse had a successful evening, Margaret Tyzack winning for her performance in The Chalk Garden, Derek Jacobi for his part in Twelfth Night, and Elena Rogers for her role in Piaf; other awards went to Patrick Stewart for Hamlet at the Novello, Lesli Margherita for Zorro at the Garrick and Douglas Hodge for La Cage au Folles at the Playhouse, that show also winning the Best Musical Revival award. Jersey Boys took the award for Best New Musical, with La Clique collecting the Best Entertainment award and God of Carnage Best New Comedy.
In opera, English National Opera enjoyed a successful year, Partenope declared Best New Opera Production, and Edward Gardner receiving the Outstanding Achievement in Opera award for his conducting work with the company throughout the year. Dance awards went to Pina Bausch Tanztheater and the company of the Royal Ballet of Flanders, while the Royal Court received the Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre award for The Pride at the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs. The Society of London Theatres also presented a special award to Sir Alan Ayckbourn.
Presented by the Society of London Theatres and named for actor Sir Laurence Olivier, the awards are presented annually, rewarding the finest productions to open in London's West End and affiliate theatres during the previous twelve months.
