Crème de la Crème of French Music Celebrate with Meyer Sound
The annual Les Victoires de la Musique award has celebrated the best and brightest in the French music scene since 1985. On February 28, three million viewers took in the event on French TV with live broadcast mixed by Audio Director Patrice Cramer, while a Meyer Sound MICA line array loudspeaker system provided pristine sound reinforcement for the live audience at the Zenith Theatre in Paris. The event also marked the French debut of Meyer Sound's new 500-HP subwoofer, positioned onstage for drum monitors.
The audio system was provided by Paris-based Dispatch, France's largest audio rental company. The main system, designed and tuned by longtime FOH engineer and sound designer Laurent Delenclos, comprised four hangs of 12 MICA line array loudspeakers each, positioned high to minimize visibility to the cameras, along with a center stack of four more MICA loudspeakers. Seven UPA-1P loudspeakers added sparkle to the hall's upper level seating, with two more UPA-1P loudspeakers and four MSL-4 loudspeakers for fill coverage. Powerful low end was handled by two stacks of nine 700-HP subwoofers, and six UPJunior VariO loudspeakers covered the onstage performers.
A Galileo loudspeaker management system with two Galileo 616 processors provided ultra-precise processing for the system, covering array-specific EQ and delays, along with temperature and humidity compensation for smooth and coherent coverage to every seat in the house.
"With so many TV cameras covering the event, it was important to design a system that would be low-profile and not interfere with the lines of sight," says Delenclos. "The MICA arrays delivered great sound and superb coverage, while meeting our requirement for minimal on-camera visibility."
Delenclos and Monitor Engineer Remy Blanchet report that the 500-HP subwoofer lived up to everyone's expectation. "Typically, a live TV broadcast creates restrictions on the levels we can provide to the performers on stage," adds Delenclos. "But even at very low volume, the 500-HP delivered a punchy bass response that was very useful, but not overpowering."
Through the years, Les Victoires de la Musique has bestowed the industry's highest honors on stars ranging from Johnny Hallyday and Charles Aznavour to Vanessa Paradis, Natascha Atlas, and MC Solaar.
