Essential Lighting, Summit Steel and PRG at the BAFTAs

For the recent BAFTA Awards, Essential Lighting and Summit Steel were on Bow Street outside the Royal Opera House in London, preparing the red carpet for the 2009 British Academy Film Awards.
Lucy Smail at West Design & Production selected Essential Lighting's Neil Harvey to provide a lighting design that included 5k Fresnels and 4 point focus lighting for the dozens of press and television crews, as well as MiTrix banners which were used to clad the truss structures legs.
The MiTrix banners displayed custom content, centred around the iconic BAFTA mask. These provided a unique and stunning backdrop to celebrity interviews and long sweeping shots of the red carpet.
Summit Steel provided a custom truss structure, originally designed by Jay Call for the 2008 awards, to cover the core press areas of the carpet. As Westminster council closed Bow Street, the structure was redesigned for 2009 to increase height and speed up the construction and load out, minimising disruption to the local area.
As well as the red carpet structures, Summit erected four self-climbing goalpost structures (based on the SmarTmast 1) and two superlite goalpost structures to manage cable runs away from the red carpet area. The roads and walkways outside of Bow Street were not closed so careful management of the public and traffic was a high priority.
Although the weather was poor, the red carpet was packed with celebrities including big names such as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, interviewed as part of the live red carpet programmes on the BBC and E! television channels.
Inside the Royal Opera House, where Jonathan Ross returned for hosting duties, WhizzKid Productions selected LD Steve Nolan to light the ceremony. Working in partnership with Mick Healy at PRG Lighting, Steves' design featured rich, vibrant colours, changing to reflect each award category.
This was also a landmark occasion for Essential Lighting, Summit Steel and PRG Lighting, who worked together for the first time since joining the Production Resource Group. Having all these areas of expertise working as one, was one of the great successes - behind the cameras - of the night.
