J&C Joel at Hoddinott Hall

J&C Joel recently carried out the supply and installation of acoustic equipment for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales at their new base at Hoddinott Hall - part of the Welsh Millennium Centre Complex.
The project, led by J&C Joel's Tony Griffiths and Richard Turner, consisted of five
1,200kg 5-line electric pilewind winch units, each designed to support large, shaped
timber acoustic baffles rigged to an 18m long box truss. Each pilewind system has the flexibility of being operated remotely at the technical gallery or from the main control station within the auditorium.
Due to the acoustic requirements of the hall each pilewind winch also has two intermediate programmable positions. With safety paramount, as well as standard working and back-up limits, each pilewind also has a slack line detection, self-sustaining gearbox and independent brake.
As the side walls were concrete-based and therefore not acoustically friendly for all styles of performance, Tony Griffiths and Richard Turner devised four sets of motorised acoustic duvets. Manufactured at J&C Joel headquarters at Sowerby Bridge, each set consisted of four steel-framed units 5m high and 2m wide - with sound absorbing infill and face covered in acoustic transparent wool serge. In total, each duvet weighs over 100kg.
