Midas PRO6 on The Script

Midas PRO6 on The Script

The Script's FOH sound engineer John Delf has been using a Midas PRO6 for the band's UK tour. Delf spec'd the PRO6 - supplied by Entec - after mixing the Irish band on a Midas XL8 for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo last December.

"It was my first time using an XL8 and even after just one sound check I had fallen in love with it," he recalls. "We were performing with a full orchestra and the production was running two XL8s at FOH and three PRO6s for monitors and recording. The house engineer was mixing the orchestra on one XL8 and I was mixing the band on the other. It just sounded so sweet and it was really easy to find my way around the desk. We were up and running really quickly and everything I needed to do mix wise was at my fingertips.

Despite being a self-confessed digital desk detractor, Delf was completely sold on Midas digital following his Nobel experience, and when the opportunity arose to try the PRO6 he jumped at the chance.

"I've always picked analogue desks over their digital counterparts, solely on the fact that I didn't believe they sounded as good," he says. "Most digital desks are laid out in a very complicated way and take forever to sort out what would normally be simple patching, and every function is three or more button presses away. With the PRO6 it's all there in front of you, and the POP (population) Groups in particular are such a genius addition it makes you wonder why nobody's thought of it before!

"Sonically the PRO6 doesn't disappoint and in my opinion sounds better than an analogue one. You have the flexibility of digital but with the warmth, clarity and separation of a Heritage or an XL4. I got to hear the desk through many different PA systems during the tour, and every night it sounded superb, while its size makes it so much easier to load in and out of the smaller venues.

"From now on I will never spec any other desk than the Midas PRO6 as it does everything I need and more, and provides sonic excellence in a very small footprint," he concludes. "I've never had so much room at FOH, and even reduced the outboard I normally carry as it does everything so well in the box there's no need to use external mic pre's or compressors. Finally the holy grail of mixing has been found; this ends the argument of which is better, analogue or digital. With Midas the future is digi - logue!"
