Refurbishment of Royal College of Music's Concert Hall Completed

On March 7 the historic Concert Hall at the Royal College of Music in London reawoke to the magnificent sounds of Britten's War Requiem. The Hall has been completely refurbished, under the direction of architects DarntonEGS Ltd. The theatre consulting team from Arup was responsible for integrating 21st century performance technology into this early 20th century, architecturally listed hall.
A key design aim was to provide elegant technical solutions which do not detract form the visual splendour of the hall. A major challenge was threading hoist systems for lighting bars and microphone arrays into the very restricted space above the ornate plaster ceiling. New technical infrastructure and concert lighting systems were provided, fully integrated with the new house lighting, which is based on a striking set of chandeliers. The technical systems contractor was LSI.
