One of the most highly acclaimed performances of the series launch was by Susan Boyle, a 47-year-old Scottish woman. She sang "I Dreamed a Dream" from the musical Les Misérables and brought the crowd to several standing ovations, astounding the three judges who gave her a unanimous "yes" vote. Her performance rocketed the show to a launch record of 10.5 million viewers. Within nine days, YouTube videos of her appearance generated more than 100 million collective views. Boyle also attracted widespread international media coverage

How it works:  Pre-auditions acts that pass the to the next stage perform in front of a studio audience and the three judges, with just one minute to impress them. The audition process is similar to The Gong Show, but with each judge pressing a buzzer instead of banging a gong if they have seen enough. Each buzzer can only be pressed once and when all three have been pressed the act must stop. However, this does not necessarily mean that the act will receive a "no" from the judges. Once an act finishes or is stopped, the judges express their opinions and decide whether they would like to see the act in the next stage of the competition. Acts need to receive a majority vote to go through and the audience is invited to express their views (often boos or cheers), which may have a positive or negative impact on a judge's decision should the judge be unsure on whether to put the act through.

As ITV said on its website:  "If the purpose of Britain's Got Talent is to find the superstars of tomorrow, then it looks like this series has come up trumps already, as Susan Boylemania sweeps with the globe in truly epic proportions. As well as proving to be a smash hit right here on the Britain's Got Talent website; it is expected that later this week the Glasgow audition by the West Lothian songstress will officially be unveiled as the most watched YouTube clip of all time!"

Internet experts believe that Susan's version of I Dreamed a Dream has now amassed 100 million video views, making it the most viewed video clip on the planet... and all this in NINE days!

Compulite's Vector consoles, Vector Wings, and Spark4D  are running ITV studios' lighting equipment. ITV is also using Compulite equipment to run "mega hits" popular shows like: X-Factor, Dancing on ICE.

Darren Lovell, who programmed the show said: " I Decided to tour the auditions of "Britain's Got Talent " with a Spark 4D for its reliability and ease of use.  The Spark 4D Performed very well controlling the theatre dimmers with also a large selection of LED fixtures including Chroma Strips, Chroma Cans, Color Punch and a handful of moving lights consisting of Mac 2K'S Profile's. Its compact size also meant it fitted perfectly in the back of the stalls in some of the smaller theatres"
